I did this a few months ago with oil pastels.
You can still see my pencil lines. I just wanted to see if they were still
"buttery" and did this on a scrap of sketch paper.
They layer nice. I should try them again instead of just scribbling then packing them away.
I am a bit of a "dibby dabber" I tend to over do details and working with a chunky, oily crayon would force me to
concentrate more on blocks of color, light and shadow rather than hard lines and details.
Patty, that is one medium I have not used. Does oil pastel dry completely like oil paint?
Good study of an apple! I wouldn't be too concerned about the pencil lines. It is good sometimes to color outside or inside the lines. I have an art friend that leaves pencil lines on her watercolors. I read somewhere that is perfectly acceptable.
Yes, knowing when to stop is an art too! That is why I had to remove branches on my last painting!!!
Thanks Grant, I have never done an entire painting with them--just little samples like that.
I do not like messy hands either or smeary messes!
What is nice about them, is you can use them on any kind of sturdy paper or canvas.
They look good on a paper with tooth.
Rich, they are made with non drying oils
and waxes so a finished work would have to be matted.
I don't know how they would be treated if done on canvas. Maybe a spray fix-a-tif or varnish?
Mine oil sticks are at least 15 years old and still workable.
Back in the mid to late 90's into the early 2000's, I was experimenting with everything.
I LOVE oils. They are messy, expensive and even though some turps are odorless, they are still toxic.
(I need all the brain cells that I have!)
I bought what was back then called "Water Miscible" oils and they were not as pleasant to work with
as oil based pigments. I still have some. I'm not sure how well they have held up over the years.
I keep tubes of paint in tightly sealed "supperware" containers.
And pencil lines showing in finished art doesn't bother me at all!!
Glad you mentioned that, Rich!
It's real. Art is real, made by human hands, not copy machines!
Your pastels are nice Grant. That is a medium I have not really tried. Nice apple sketch as well Patty. I've really been neglecting my drawing/sketching/painting lately. I could say I don't have time but I know how much time I "waste" during the day when I could be doing something creative.
Here is one I found in my art file, done a number of years ago.
"A moment in time
Immortalized forever
With silver and light"
That is very pretty, Don!
The yellow in the sky is sets the mood!
I don’t always have time either, but here’s what I do:
I keep my sketchbook open on my table and every day I spend 5 to 10 minutes just sketching something prominent from my day..anything! I can use ink, pencil or any choice of color.
It may take all week to fill one page with the small vignettes. I date each vignette and viola!
I have a sketch diary. Art enjoyment doesn’t always have to be a finished piece of work!
Rich, interesting watercolor of New Mexico scene. We went to Taos years ago but it was in the summer and very hot. Didn't enjoy, but have been to NM other times and liked it a lot.
