Patty, Your small acrylic has depth. I agree with Rich.
Here is another soft pastel. A study of patterns. in fact I called it Fall Patterns.

You have some strong color and forms in that study, Grant.
It reminds me of some of Guaguin's Tahitian backgrounds.
Like this one
Very tapestry-like quality.

I'm fond of some of the works of Post Impressionists.

I painted this one in 2004
16 x 20 oil on canvas (I think because it looks varnished)*
After Henri-Matisse who painted this about 1913. Basket With Oranges

(*around that time, I was painting in oil, but also trying to like acrylic) I always varnished
my oil paintings with damar. I normally write on the back of the canvas stretcher which medium I used, but I covered the back of this canvas with
stapled on brown paper to protect the back)
I just sat it on the desk to grab a snapshot so it is a bit skewed.

Very strong and well executed Patty. In art school copying the masters was often done.

I bought my first camera to take slides of my artworks. At one point I fit a small ball head on top of my easel and took slides as the light changed. The slide image was captured with a slide duping rig made by Bowens. I chased the sky as the wind kept changing directions. Another soft pastel made from life.

Thanks Grant, I appreciate your comments.

I have no problems with doing painting for lessons from the greats. We don't learn art in a vacuum.
It also allows me to concentrate on handling the medium rather than having to come up with a subject and keeping it under control.
For me, the most important aspect is the ability to handle the paint with skill.

You have done well with soft pastels.
I have some and also some oil pastels but have not done much with them. My Rembrandt oil pastels
are now a vintage set.

Cool idea about mounting a ball head on the easel!

Most of my paintings are packed in a box in the basement.
I may dig them out after the holidays.
Most of them are crap though! LOL

You lake painting is well balanced and detailed without being sharp and saturated. Nicely done!

Grant, I really like the foreground work on your green painting, post #39. The blue sky reflections set it off.

Post #41 very abstract. Leave it up to the viewer to see what they want.. Interesting. I see different things in it.

Interesting idea to take photos as you are painting en plen air. I didn't do much of that, once or twice. I always use photos for reference. The Caveat of that is to not try to put every detail in the painting that is in the photo. You captured the scene very well!

Patty, You did awesome! Comparing it to his original, I'm impressed! A print of his original is on sale for $207.99.

I am really enjoying the variety of work being posted here. Well done all. Interesting that a lot of photographers are also inclined to do other forms of art as well.

I was looking through an "art folder" on my computer and found this color pencil sketch of an egg. Most of the "stuff" I found in the folder is pretty bad though and I will not be posting that. Smile  I have been getting an urge to do a line and wash though so I might try that in the next few days.

Don, we all do keep busy with art!

Your egg looks like my breakfast this morning! Good one. Very realistic, good detail and spot on colors!

Don, good pencil work on the egg.I bet it was cold by the time you got to eat it.
Rich, I do work from photos. You are quite right that one needs to simplify and not put ALL the details in.
I also like to mix water colour and soft pastel. The one in fall colours I reprinted and added oil stick to a canvas print [in a later version]. The second named afternoonis is plein air. Edit Ijust  found the original fall photo.

There are many times when someone will say of a sunset or sunrise photo, "you should paint that" It is mostly a black foreground with sky colors. A photo like that doesn't transfer to a painting well. Too much black. In fact, I don't, and have never owned, a tube of black paint. But I found out when my grandsons were growing up and I would let them paint they wanted black. I would mix a black from UM blue and burnt umber.

The first one has awesome colors, the hills are alive with beautiful fall colors. Reflections are great!

The second one has a good sky and you handled the greens great! Sometimes green can overcome a painting.

Good work!

Rich, Thank you for the kind words.

Since I edited the post that Rich referred to by adding a photo and 2 subsequent paintings I want to add this painting as it is one of the images Rich referred to.
