September Challenge - Selective colouring. Part Colour part B&W
#51
Thanks Lorell!

Natalie, that is a cool car! I believe a 1956 Pontiac.
Love the flag!

Dave, thanks for the thoughtful comments! When I am hand coloring I always remind myself that if I want the whole thing colorized why not take a color photo! And in painting I think that if I want all the small detail in the scene painted, just take a photo.

Well done on the Egret. Perfect, grabs the attention of the viewer instantly!

Dave, I just saw your colour version. The selective colour on B&W is quite powerful. Well done ! And mindful.

I think it was Grant who suggested this one.

Thanks Rich. Perfect? Hardly; for example I see now that I should have made the lightest values on the bird maybe 10% lighter. But overall I think it turned out pretty good.

Thank you Grant. You wrote "mindful" but I'm not sure what you feel I was mindful of.  I did make an effort to avoid intensely saturated yellow so maybe that's it.

Michael - solid composition, good values, sharp and with a nice blurred background, and eye-catching color. Nicely done.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Dave, Maybe I am miss using the English language. What I did mean was that you thought the selective colour challenge, how it applies to your Egret and then you executed your idea to completion.
Michael, Well done. That is exactly what I had in mind.

Love it Michael! The red and the silver work well together!

Grant, you didn't misuse the language. It's just that there are so many things one could think about when taking or processing a photo (exposure, contrast, color saturation, DoF and sharpness, composition, and lots more) that I didn't know which one(s) you might have been thinking of.

But in the planning to convert the color original for this challenge there was really only one thing thing that made sense to me: leaving only the yellow areas of the head in color while making sure it was done with restraint to avoid a jarring, out of place over-saturated yellow.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

It will be hard to match the success of the past two challenges, but does anyone have suggestions for the October Challenge?

I've been thinking about it and will put forward

Something Old

Lots of possibilities here:
- old cars
- other old vehicles
- old hand tools
- old clothes
- old boots and shoes
- old technology; from abaci to hand calculators to PCs
- old media (LPs or Beta Max anyone?)
- old farm equipment
- old buildings, of course
- ancient ruins
- old cultures (Amish, Native Americans, and many more)
- archaeological sites
- old people (like some of us)
- old cameras
- museums (tons of old stuff there)

I'm sure you all can come up with many more.

So what do you think? Of course if you have different challenge topics in mind, propose them.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Dave,  Old works, but how about a spin on it and contrast Old with New. Unless you think it will be too limiting....
