Dave, I agree that this still life was a good composition for a painterly revision. I like how it came out and the nice fade of light and shadows and the popping colors that are practically aglow. I agree with Rich, it would be a good inspiration for a watercolor painting.
Steve, The lighting on the subject in your mom's painting is perfect. I think she was attracted to the gnarly roods of the beets and she sure did them justice. They have a personality of their own. But the thing I am most attracted to is the shadows she so perfectly painted. A very talented artist, your mom was.
