I mentioned that I have another photo of the same hummingbird in the same nest as the one I posted a couple of days ago. Like that photo, this one was nearly full black out of the caners.
I applied the same processing methods: brightening the image a lot, tweaking temperature, adjusting colors, and sharpening. It turned out better than I expected...
In an effort to break out of my "dark background, light subject" pattern I've been trying to consciously look for chances to take lighter and brighter photos. Here's one from May 6 that didn't avoid the dark background, but at least has a lighter subject...

Thank you Rich. My experience has been that anytime one gets a good photo of one it is with a large dose of luck.
That's a fine image; the figures add interest, of course. and the rest fits my mental image of the Oregon coast: rugged dark rocks, dark green and hardy trees (often storm-ravaged), mid-value sand, medium blue water, and breakers that can range from more than gentle to dangerously powerful.

All the luck in the world wouldn't get me a photo of a hummingbird on the nest unless I won wone of those lotteries we talk about.
Simply gorgeous white roses. The dash of red just helps to bring out their whiteness.

Dave: Excellent shot of the hummingbird.....O how I wish I could find a nest....they are too clever for me.....Yours turned out well, I love the motion in the wings, nice composition.....love the nice greens, too. Your white roses shot is also very good. I don't see any blown highlights and I rather prefer the dark background, makes them stand out! The dash of red is also a nice touch.
