Saturday, April 16, 2002 - Dave - 04-16-2022

Here is another shot of the Great Egret that ambled around my neighborhood a few days ago. (He is standing in my front yard; the grayish background is my next-door neighbor's driveway.)

Adults in the breeding season display a color change in and around the eye; changing from the usual yellow to a rather vivid, minty-color with just a touch of yellow green.

With this egret, the color is less mint-colored and more yellow-green than with most others. I wondered why and came up with two plausible reasons:

1) As I noted in my original egret thread, this egret may be an adolescent and not yet able to attain the fully adult green eye patch coloring.

2) Or it could be simply how far along in the breeding season this egret is - maybe it was before or after the peak, so the eye area color change might not have reached its peak, or had already peaked and is gradually disappearing.

Perhaps it's a combination of the two.

I think your reasoning is sound on the coloring Dave. And didn't you mention that it did not seem as large as an adult? Anyway, another good image.

Thanks for starting the daily for us.

I've trouble shooting the water pump in the camper and have about decided that the pump is bad. Less than a year old too. I could probably make a warranty claim but we are going on an extended camping trip in a couple of weeks so I'm just going to buy a new one and replace it myself. We really don't have time to fool with a claim.

Quite rainy here today after a really nice day yesterday. We went to the state park north of us for a while, hoping to see some migrating warblers, but didn't have a lot of luck. Had lunch at a local place then went by Callaway Gardens where I got the following shots.

Thanks Don.

Too bad about the water pump. It seems like circumstances always find a way to cost us extra $$, doesn't it?

Nice photos. It's interesting how the shapes and diagonal in #1 are echoed in the B&W photo.

It's been a busy and productive week. I got my taxes e-filed a couple of days ago, did some temporary boarding up of a small window pane in a french door, helped my wife with arranging a contribution to her SEP IRA plan, investigated what to invest the $$ in and processed that, and ordered some more watercolor tubes for my much-delayed but hopefully successful return to that artistic outlet. (As I mentioned a few weeks ago, the amazing watercolors by Jean Haines (jeanhaines.com) have inspired me.)

Today I'm recuperating after some heavy gardening work yesterday; I dug up a section of the front yard, removed as much of the unwanted growth and sticks and stones as possible, and mixed in a few bags of good garden soil. We're going for 3 short rows of sunflowers (various heights and varieties), and today I'll sow those seeds. Will probably also start other veggies in pots.

Dave, sounds like you had a pretty good week. I love the egrets, great thread and very striking, very striking!
Don, sounds like you've been extremely busy. What great shots, I especially love that purple.
I came back home to a ton of pollen. I hate pollen. Not the greatest shot, I was doing about 50 and just rolled down the window and hoped for the best. So many people trying to get their cars tidy.

Quite a nice headshot on that Egret, Dave. Lots of them in the green fields around here. Sunny here this morning but just hovering around freezing. I'll go out and check my plants soon. I have nothing put out but have things in pots in the greenhouse. Some will stay and others will head out to the raised beds soon.

Don - pretty spring flowers and stonework. The best thing we did when we had our RV trailer was to replace the water pump. It worked so much better than the original.

Good morning, Michael. Your photo reminds me that my truck really needs a wash.

RE: Saturday, April 16, 2002 - Don - 04-16-2022

Hi Michael.

"Too bad about the water pump. It seems like circumstances always find a way to cost us extra $$, doesn't it?"  Turns out the water pump is fine. Apparently one of the valves for by passing the hot water heater was leaking a bit, allowing just a little bit of water to get into the WH. This of course decreased the system pressure causing the WP to come on briefly to get the pressure back up. So, I think I dodged a bullet there. I still have some clean up to do in the trailer, etc but that can wait for another time. I also need to recuperate from laying on the hard floor and trying to get to the WP.  I was explaining to DW all the things I went through and how I think it is fixed now and she said "You're pretty handy".  Glad to know she realized that.  Smile

I don't even try to keep the cars clean during pollen season. I might hose them off every now and then but if you wash them they are yellow again by the end of the day.

That's great news. Anything to mitigate headaches always helps.
I am the same way. In central SC the pollen is ridiculous.

Just saw your edit. I agree, it is always a good feeling when my wife recognizes a job well done. Get to recuperating so you can enjoy!

Howdy gents,
Good to see you all this fine day.
I've been busy in the kitchen, boiling eggs, baking rolls, and a few more things to get ready for tomorrow gathering.

Steve, I saw some photos of your tomato plants the other day.  Looks like they are off to a good start.

Don, I am glad that you had a quick fix on your trailer pump.  It is nice to have a handyman around the house.  That breed is disappearing fast.  But unfortunately, things are more complicated now.  Things are either made so cheaply that it doesn't pay to get them fixed or things are so complicated, that you need to be more than a mechanic to fix them.  Ya did good, Don.  I hope you are enjoying your nap. Great images, Don. I especially like the B&W one.

Michael, we do not experience that kind of problem with pollen around here.  No wonder there is all kinds of advertisements on TV about allergen remedies.
I enjoyed your drive-by shooting.  It meant that you were thinking about us and looking for something to share in today's daily.  I get nervous going through a car wash like that.  I do it only when I absolutely have to.  The alternative for me is to use the self-serve car wash in the winter where you scrub the car yourself and rinse it off with the spray wands.  In the summertime, I was my car in the backyard.

Dave, Another great closeup of the white egret.  I know you like taking photos of birds as much as flowers.  It was nice that this bird visited you in your front yard.  If you want a frequent visitor, just open up a can of tuna and share it with him.  He'll be back.

So, I will follow your lead, Dave.
We are spoiled on Anna Maria Island.  The birds are very tame and I am only a few feet away from this Great Blue Heron who was on a mission to get some lunch.  It walked up the pier and looked on the FISH CLEANING table to see if there were any remnants from the last fisherman who used it.  He flew up on the table forcing the white egret to move over.  It didn't take him long before he found what he was looking for directly below him.  It was a bin of discarded fish skins from Sheephead.  And a fine lunch it made.

Dave, Good one, I like the crop! Interesting info!

Don the handyman! Good job! A beautiful blue flower! Nice and sharp!
Good purple color, green makes it pop.

Really an interesting doorway to the church. Perfect in B&W.

Michael, if our carwash is that crowded I turn around and come back another day!

Hi Steve!

Lorell, an awesome pictorial event with story! Love it!

Well, my week of driving is done. Our friend is doing well. Thursday the wind was blowing 50 mph with 60 mph gusts, I wasn't looking forward to the drive. Was glad I didn't have a side wind. Got 33 MPG down and 21 MPG back. My average on a good day is 27 MPG.

I took a photo of our new Amazon Fulfillment Center built right next to I-90 in Sioux Falls, SD.
It is 2.9 Million square feet and 5 stories. Will be opening soon. There will be lots of truck traffic in that area!

Glad that you are home safe, Rich.  I am glad that you left if good memories. It is a tough thing that you did. You are a great friend.

We have buildings like that going up all over the place here in Michigan. I cannot believe how fast they have appeared in such a short amount of time.

The one nearest us is 1,000,000,350 sq. Feet but it is just a warehouse.
