Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Dave - 03-06-2022 Good day folks. Something a little different from my usual style/treatment... And here's a more "normal" version of nearly the same crop... RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Adamphotoman - 03-06-2022 First a Grant Rant, After carefully composing a post [taking most of an hour] I lost my work before posting. I hate it when that happens. Dave, Although I like both versions, loosing the colour improves the background. In the colour version the out of focus branch is distracting. But I like the colour blossoms. I urge you to combine both versions. Dave, Quote from yesterday's thread "I wonder (not for the first time) why it is that leaving the white of the paper to show in a watercolor painting is considered to be an indication of mastery," To shed some light on this delicate subject I think the definition of OPAQUE is necessary; Opake - the original English spelling [*]Impenetrable by light; neither transparent nor translucent. [*]Not reflecting light; having no luster. dull - meaningless In watercolour painting "Saving your Whites" requires mastering the medium. Using an opaque Chinese White, one looses luminosity although fine lines are arguably better rendered with pigment, or sometimes by Scratching leaving pin pricks Here is a watercolour I made many years ago. I shared this in WC. Funny I no longer have the painting. A friend made a copy slide of it so I have a record. [*] RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Man From Ironbark - 03-06-2022 Instant fan. RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Rich - 03-06-2022 Dave, I agree with Grant on the OOF branch. In the B&W one it is not noticed and or dismissed. The color one, since red is an attention getting color the eye tends to go to it. Grant, I agree with the definition of Opaque. In watercolor leaving the white of the paper is sometimes difficult requiring a masking medium or a road map of the painting showing the whites to be saved. I think you are right that the large white areas would not be a good choice for Chinese White pigment. I remember this painting you showed us on WC. Well done! On my drive back from the Black Hills I got a little bored about 3/4 of the way back and took some road shots. Glad I got back when I did as we got 6 inches of snow. South Dakota Interstate traffic in the winter. Coming down the hill to the Missouri River. River Bridge. On top of the hill right center would be where the Dignity statue is I posted a while back. RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Dreamin - 03-06-2022 Hi, Dave....I like both versions of your branch, looks like a Redbud tree? And I agree, the blurred branch is a tad distracting! Sure wish a hummer had landed on it!! Grant, I've done that so many times, lost my post, so now I write it in Notepad, and then copy and paste when I'm done....all but the attachments, that is! I love the watercolor...love the muted colors. I like the looseness of it, wish I could paint like that!! Good point about the whites. Rich, nice stretch of roads. I spent a few minutes trying to figure out the shadows on the road.....LOL! It's a reflection in the windshield!! Right? Brrr! Snow! UGH! We were almost to 80 F today....Oh how I'm ready for warm weather! But typical is upper 40's. Spent Saturday helping my brother make home made kielbasa......He will have enough for all year!! Too much garlic for me, though..... RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Rich - 03-07-2022 Natalie, yes, the air vent. I am impressed with the kielbasa! Looks delicious! Lots of work! RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Dave - 03-07-2022 Thanks for the analysis and the observation about the blurred branch, Grant. Nice loose watercolor, too. Great looking kielbasa, Natalie! Hi Rich. Apologies if I've missed anyone. RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 03-07-2022 Natalie, Oh yum. Everything is better homemade. I cannot imagine how good those miles and miles of kielbasa must taste. In addition to enjoying the beautifully displayed rows of Polish Sausage, your brother has some interesting items in this room that appear to be cool antiques. I see a treadle sewing machine cabinet, a "box" for a dozen eggs, a two-man saw for cutting down large tree trunks, a copper pail or kettle, a wooden childproof gate, and an interesting think on top of the egg box that I cannot identify. I lot of great items to create a cool still life. Nice photo, Natalie. How many pounds did you two make? Dave, I like them both and prefer the colored one. Maybe you could doge some of the color from the twig in the background. Rich, you had some pretty good sailing on those backroads. Wow, nothing like we experienced coming back on Interstate I-75 from Florida to Michigan. Grant, Never thought about how one created WHITE using watercolors, but obviously you have mastered the technique. Well done, Grant, it is a winner. Like Natalie said, "I wish I could paint like that". So, here is my painting coming to you after creating it in Topaz Studio. No white in this creative abstract. RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Dave - 03-07-2022 That's lovely, Lorell. Wonderful light and colors. RE: Sunday, March 6, 2022 - Dreamin - 03-07-2022 Thanks, all. Of course we had to bake one to test it out. We eat it with horseradish, the red kind that is mixed with beets. It's sweeter that way. We had 65 pounds of fresh pork butt and belly fat.....cut up and run through the grinder, then mixed with spices and refrigerate over night, remix and then stuff. He also made 25 pounds of breakfast sausage that had pork and venison mixed together. I had some for breakfast next day. Was very good! That's beautiful, Lorell! Yes, my brother's wife passed away going on 5 years now.....they both loved to collect farm and household memorabelia....There's a vintage egg scale and egg candler in the mix somewhere. |
