Morning Everyone,

More clouds from my Wet Coast collection. Cowichan Bay BC [on Vancouver Island]

Another commercial client made simple high end furniture from reclaimed lumber. In this case a bench for a specific space.

Hi Grant, and any who follow.

I really like that B&W cloud image, Grant. (It reminds me of a shot I took years ago of storm clouds retreating from the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. That was my single most successful photo: won a few awards with it, plus I got a high end furnishings boutique to display a few of my framed photos, and a framed 24" x 36" print was sold to a wealthy young couple. netting me around $300.)

What a view from that window!

Yesterday was a cloudy day here; the clouds weren't thick enough to produce a blah gray day - just right to diffuse the light into one that flattered outdoor photos, especially of flowers. Here's one...

Grant,
Well done, Adam. Boy those windows are just gorgeous in Photo #2, especially the way they are framed.  The color of the window seat agrees with the colors of the framing and certainly its natural and rustic appearance blends with the scenery below.
The view of the bay and clouds overhead is breathtaking.  I am guessing you chose B&W because the CLOUDS are the STARS in this one.
Thanks for starting our daily.

Dave,
Yes, your photo is proof that your cloudy day was a perfect day for photographing flowers.  It is amazing how the huge white box in the sky brings out the colors as compared to the effect the sun has on them.

As promised, I have something to share today.  I used it for another FLICKR Challenge, Photoelasticity.

You should try it, it was a fun experiment creating the effect of Polarized light.  All you need is a Polarized Filter, your computer screen and some plastic.
In my case, I created a blank white image that filled my laptop's screen.  I turned the computer flat so I could then put a plastic liner from a package of chocolate chip cookies that were already devoured by us on the white screen.  I looked through the viewfinder of my camera after attaching a polarized filter to it and WHAM, the colors were so cool.  And as you rotated the filter, the colors would change.  But to make it more interesting and magnify the colors, I added a crystal ball that I have taken photos of on several occasions.  I thought of putting this photo in our current "ROUND" challenge but wanted to share all the details here with you here instead.

Maybe give it a try, right?  Go through your house and look for plastic items, such a clear plastic dinnerware, plastic packing or wrapping from food items, etc.  You can use your computer screen or IPAD, or even phone after creating a pure BLANK White background for your screen, and then the final element is the polarizing filter.  Can't create this effect without it.  If you don't have a laptop or IPAD, you can place the plastic items in front of your desktop monitor and achieve the same effect.

So, are you ready for the result?
Wait no further, here it is:

Grant, love the clouds, looks like a small thunderhead.
View is lovely as is the bench, good exposure.

Dave, the best lighting! Pretty in pink!

Lorell, what fun you are having in a Michigan winter! Good experiment. So the crystal ball is on top of the screen? Very interesting!

Dave, the first photo is for you. Here is how we keep our streets clean! That and a 5 out of 7 day street cleaning machine. My neighbor used to have the job for the city but he retired. He was up at 3 AM to do the work.

Second photo is finished mural of a friend, Popcorn the Clown. He is pretty pumped about it, as well he should!

Lorell, polarizer filters are used to see stress in plastics and the saftey glass in windscreens in your car.
But what fun you are having.
Rich, So many corn cobs. So you live in Mitchell almost on the Nebraska border.
Dave, Again thank you for the kind words.
Where is Patty hiding?

RE: Friday January 14, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 01-14-2022

Hello again,
I think Patty is sewing.  We sure do miss her and your upbeat comments and tidbits of information that she shares.

Rich,
The popcorn mural really came out bigger than life.  I can see why he is happy.  People must really love him.
That is impressive that they used a street cleaning machine five days a week.  It does make a difference.  But people should not be littering in the first place to begin with, just like the sign demands!

So, Rich here is the piece of plastic that I put on the BLANK WHITE SCREEN of my laptop.  I had the laptop flipped so that the screen was resting on the floor.  Then I put this plastic form on the white screen, positioned just the way you see it in the photo below.  It is the plastic form that interacts with the polarizing filter to create all the colors.  But the first photos I took did not have much interest and so I grabbed the glass ball and placed it in the middle of the plastic form.  It reflected or refracted (not sure which) the light and colors nicely.  I was surprised though that every place on the screen not covered by the plastic showed up BLACK in the image.  Which actually turned out nice.  Not sure why this happened though.  The plastic was from a container of chocolate chunk cookies (and they were so good) used to keep the cookies from crumbling within its container.

Grant, You must have been looking at Mitchell, Nebraska. I am in Southeast South Dakota. Abou 90 miles north of Nebraska.

Yes, lots of cobs!

Corn cobs are split in two lengthwise and nailed to the exterior of the building, using approximately 1.5 million nails and 325,000 ears of corn.

Lorell, Popcorn is a Shriner and has been working at the Palace gift shop for over 30 years. Every Christmas he ramrods the Masonic Temple kitchen and serves over 1000 free meals on Christmas Day. He says no one should be alone on Christmas Day.

Ok, thanks for showing the plastic. I had in my mind thin plastic like Saran Wrap. Neat! How did you hear about that trick?
My photos look good on your monitor!

RE: Friday January 14, 2022 - Adamphotoman - 01-14-2022

Lorell, If you were to look at a monitor through a pola screen and then rotate it, at some point the screen will turn black. That might be what is happening.
Rich, To me 90 miles is close.

      Big Grin

I know nothing about wet bromide printing. But what little I learned a few minutes ago with a search I can see why it was a labor of love for you. Amazing!

RE: Friday January 14, 2022 - Adamphotoman - 01-14-2022

This one was a labor of love. Old fashioned wet bromide print. India ink. Then the image is bleached away leaving the waterproof ink. The image is dog eared and needs to be flattened, and mounted but I thought I would share it with you.
