Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 - Dave - 06-03-2025 Good day, all. We have been blessed to observe new hummingbird youngsters; I believe for the 5th time. We've followed the entire process, from nest building to egg laying to hatching, then the development of the nestlings independent lives. All have been Anna's Hummingbirds - the most common variety in my area. Here's a shot (taken yesterday, 2025/06/02) barely showing the two most recent nestlings. I'm convinced the mother is the same one who raised two nestlings a month or so ago. She returned to the nest she used previously, repairing and strengthening it. Some how she intuitively understands and applies principles of engineering to make the nest as secure as possible. Notice how she positioned it to rest securely on 5 different small branches. My wife bought a strawberry plant a week or so ago, and it sure has produced. One strawberry was 2 inches (5 cm) tall and at least 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide; so big that it wouldn't come close to fitting in the nearby hummingbird nest. Photo taken yesterday... Have yourselves a safe, happy, and productive week. RE: Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 - Rich - 06-03-2025 WoW, that nest is awesome! Natures engineering! That strawberry makes my mouth water, lovely! Our weather has been up and down, 93 yesterday and barley 70 today! Mt Etna in Italy is erupting too! RE: Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 - Dave - 06-03-2025 Thanks Rich. Yes, the nests of hummingbirds are superbly engineered. Note that they often use the strongest material to be found in their environment - pieces of spider webs. My wife's strawberry plant continues to produce the largest strawberries I've ever seen. One was at least the size of a standard large egg. Speaking of weather, as I was typing this reply I heard several loud rolling claps of thunder. Sounded like they came from many miles north or northwest of me; that makes sense because that's the direction of the nearest large mountains. Still, our chances of significant storms here in coastal Huntington Beach are slim. RE: Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 - Man From Ironbark - 06-04-2025 Beautiful strawb photo. Sharp and rich in colour, did make me want t eat it. The hummingbird and its nest are something fabulous. The photo is quite well composed as well. Love their little beaks sticking up. RE: Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 - Dave - 06-05-2025 Sincere thanks, MFI. |
