Weekender 15/16th March. - Man From Ironbark - 03-14-2025

I'm a little ahead of the rest of the forum but the last thread was Tuesday so maybe I'll stir some people up to start posting by adding Friday to their weekend?

It is rather flat around here but there are a couple of ranges of low hills.

Thanks for starting a Weekender, MFI.

That's a nice photo. I like that the large cloud at top left is balanced by the clump of trees at bottom right balance each other. And the photo is quite instructive in that it illustrates how a blue sky is darker at the top and lighter near the horizon, which is in the distance.

I apologize for not participating much lately. It has been a challenging and busy 3 months. Both my wife and I have been dealing with the loss of close family members. And more recently we all have spent many hours cleaning up the house and converting a room into an enclosed and extremely clean space dedicated to home dialysis.

Next on my growing To Do list is working on our taxes.

So it will probably be several weeks before I can get out much for photos worth sharing here. But I did take a few shots yesterday of the hard pastels we rediscovered during our home cleanup.

I bought them around 1965; a 36-color set at a cost of $4.50. (Today they'd cost $40 to $55)...

And after these 60 years they are still as vibrant and usable as ever...

I had planned to take photos of last night's total lunar eclipse, but fell asleep. RATS!

I wish us all a good weekend.

Peter I agree with Dave on your photo! Good capture! The nickname for us in South Dakota is the "Flat-Landers" but I think you have us beat!

Dave, so sorry for your losses and health issues.

Looks like your pastel set is nearly new! Needs some artistic person (you) to give them a workout!

Here is a photo from the inside of Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. Elvis at the piano that is still there. Can you name the others??

RE: Weekender 15/16th March. - Man From Ironbark - 03-16-2025

It is the Million Dollar Quartet. "Million Dollar Quartet" is a recording of an impromptu jam session involving Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash made on December 4, 1956 at the Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. This photo comes from that session.

Hi Rich, and thanks for your condolences. Any of us who hang around long enough have similar experiences, so mine is no special case.

Very neat photo of a memorable gathering of music legends. Although I was a bit too young in 1956 to follow their music and never have been a big Elvis fan, I recognize their impact on music

I have goals of using the pastels; just need to find the time to try..

Mfi, thanks for providing details behind this historic collaboration of 4 musical giants.

Never really could have been called an Elvis fan. I was probably too young to have got caught up in all that. Even though I heard it all on the radio which was all we had in the 50s and most of the 60's. I did hear a Johnny Cash song recently. Though I have a friend who is into Johnny Cash, I'd never heard this song before. Hurt

Thinking about my posted photo. It was a part of a sequence of attempting to get shots of clouds disappearing into the distance for the good lady from ironbark. In her dotage she's taken art up again and wanted some good photos of clouds to match colours with and help her get that depth perspective of clouds disappearing into the horizon. She was also interested in that blue sky gradient. So yes, I took her for a quick drive locally rather than drive closer to the hills or indeed up to the tops of the hills where the best perspectives can be gained around here.

Thanks Dave and Peter. I was a big Elvis fan along with Jerry Lee Lewis. Llts of music history in Memphis!

Catching up on some posts...

Hurt was released in 1994 by Nine Inch Nails and was written by Trent Reznor. Johnny Cash did his version in 2002, earning him the Country Music Association award for "Single of the Year" in 2003. Powerful lyrics.

MFIB, I like the cloud dominant photo.

Rich, I have seen that photo before. Maybe one day I will make it to the Sun studio myself. It's not like it is a bad drive from here. In a little over a week DW and I are going to drive the entire length of the Natchez Trace, starting in Natchez, Mississippi and ending up in Nashville. We will probably stop by and see the house where Elvis was born, but I don't think we will go through the Museum. I was never a big Elvis fan but I do recognize the impact he had on the music industry. It was fun going to see his movies when I was young though.

Yes I remember the early Elvis movies. They were too many girls in bikinis for one man to survive kind of thing. I wasn't sold on them.

Certainly not the best movies ever made, but as a young guy at the time, the girls were worth the price of admission. Also I seemed to recall reading that Elvis wanted to make "serious" movies, but apparently the powers that be were making too much $$ on the  movies where there was music and girls in bikinis to alter the format. Not sure he would have ever been accepted as a serious actor in any case.
