RE: Pete's Images - Luv2shoot - 09-04-2024

Great images, all of them. Not that you asked, but the last one is the one that grabs me the most. How did you happen to capture this moment? The focus, contrast, and composition are spot on. It is so interesting. Wow, is that good. What software did you use to convert that one to B&W?
I also like "OFF MIDDel PLAAS ROAD" a lot. I feel like I am falling into the photo.

Thanks for the comments, Peter and Lorell. Appreciated.

Lorell – Every year there are one or two national photographic congresses, held by the PSSA (Photographic Society of South Africa) and/or The Cape Photographers. This year the latter group held a congress in the village of Carlitzdorp, which we (the wife and I) attended. Usually, a lecture is given by Willem Oets – the guy with the cat’s whiskers in the centre. The lady on the left is Christell, who lives in our area, and was a member of our camera club at one stage. This year they decided to add an additional photographic attraction, and set up a stage performance for us to shoot. Each of the five sessions were supposed to have a maximum of ten photographers, but it got a bit out of hand with the others barging in. I used only the stage lighting provided (no flash).

For the B&W conversion I virtually always use Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 (the free version that Google gave away before selling Nik to DXO). Although I often combine a couple of presets, here I only used one.

At our regular club meeting next week, I will be entering coloured versions of some of these images. I will post those here in about one week’s time.

I must say that, of these, I had the most fun editing the Kronberg image, and turning a shot taken at midday into a night shot! (as described in the previously attached pdf file).

Regards – Pete

Ahhhh, Ohhhhh, Wowzzzzzzerrrrrrrssss.
A very nice collection, Peter.
You had a nice collection of windows. I especially like the photographer on board shot.
And because of the bright yellow fields of flowers, I think i prefer the colored version of the landscapes over the B&W versions posted previously.
One of my favorite images is the ship at night. Well done, Peter.
Thanks for sharing all of these with us.

I agree with Lorell and the landscapes are my favorites. Love the lighting and color.

RE: Pete's Images - dewarp - 10-22-2024

Thanks for the comments, Lorell and Rich.

Also, thanks for the comments on Flikr, Lorell.

That SS Amsterdam at night was a huge problem. The city of Amsterdam has an annual "Festival of Lights" around Nov/Dec. I toured the canals on a boat after dark. Last time out I had many blurred images, so this time I used Manual, setting the speed to 1/100 s and the ISO to 6400, F-Stop wide open, and generally on auto-focus (although one might need to press the button a few times to get it to register). I took about 160 shots, and virtually all of them are seriously under-exposed, and thus had severe noise. I tried out as many trial conversion/noise removal processes as I could get my hands on. As a result, I eventually bought Topaz DeNoise AI. I now use a combination of DeNoise AI together with DeNoise 5 and 6, depending on the image.

I was amazed at the detail one can still get out of the very dark areas. I was actually editing another image from that night last week, and was surprised to find that I could bring up details of a concrete block and steel baseplate below water level. I had not even known that it was there. Of course, given the amount of noise, one can hardly use those details. But still, it is amazing that the camera registered it at all.

The other night at the camera club meeting, a few members agreed that TOPAZ DENOISE was one of the best and favorite softwares for DENOISING.
