Some sort of wood, where the soft part has eroded away, and only thing left is the hard parts....?????? I've seen soap do the same thing.

Good thinking in eroded away(more on that later) but not wood. Sorry. Not soap either, in case you were thinking that but you are sort of on the right track in that way of thinking..
