RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Man From Ironbark - 05-13-2022 Is it for opening paint tubes? RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Dreamin - 05-13-2022 Trying to figure how to do that, Peter. But no. Not for paint tubes. Wondering how much longer to let this game go? Another hint.....the little metal part is like a funnel. RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Man From Ironbark - 05-13-2022 Ah. For pouring powders through? Pouring sand to make sand images? RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Dave - 05-13-2022 Keep the game going - this is fun. Let's see: the item is used in some sort of arts & crafts activity, it is about 4 inches long, the pointed part is not used to help remove something (the contents of an egg, for example, and presumably not from anything else either), instead it is actually a small funnel. The funnel suggests that it is used to insert some substance into a presumably hollow object. The only thing that comes to mind is that it's used to make eggs that have had the contents removed in some way less fragile by filling them with something; this suggests decorating eggs, as many folks do around Easter. Sounds logical, but I have a sense that this isn't right. MFI's thought that it's used to dispense some sort of powder sounds more likely to me. Or maybe it's used to apply paint or some other item such as glue. RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Quint - 05-13-2022 A planting dibble RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Luv2shoot - 05-13-2022 How about a funnel for pouring melted metal into a form. Like melted silver into a wax form to make a ring. RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Dreamin - 05-14-2022 Quint, I thought surely, you would know! But no, not a planting dibble! Lorell, no....not for melted METAL....but just to let you know, you cannot pour melted metal into a WAX form....the wax would melt! You can make a form by making a wax ring, putting it in a plaster two part mold, heat it to melt the wax out...pour melted metal into the hole you leave and it replaces area with metal....? I made some stuff back in college days.....LOL! "Pouring sand to make sand images?" Peter, Hmmmm, that's a good idea! but not what this is!! Dave, if only you knew how close you are to the answer, but no, not used to fill eggs. Decorating eggs? yes....paint? or such as glue? glue? No! I actually think I have to give it to you!! This item is a "kistka" in Ukrainian, or BONE....The word kistka (pronounced keest-kah) comes from the Ukrainian word kist which means bone, suggesting that the original kistka was a piece of animal bone dipped in melted beeswax. A kistka is the wax tool used in the traditional wax-resist and dye (batik) method to produce colorful eggs in the same fashion as Ukranian pysanky. They have electric ones, but his is not....you have to heat the brass funnel over a candle, then scoop up some beeswax and run it over an egg and begin dipping the egg in different permanent dye colors after each wax application, going from no dye for the first layer to retain whites, the the next lightest color until you end in your darkest.....OR you can melt the wax and dip your tool into it. I have done some many years ago!! Long process!! At the end, you heat the egg over a candle and wipe away the wax! Such fun to see the colors emerge! They have electric ones, too..... Hope you enjoyed the game!! It is rare for me to find something for the WhatIzIt post because most things are too obvious....or they seem that way to me. But I found this, and thought I would give it a go. It is part of something..... RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Rich - 05-14-2022 A form for knitting or quilting? RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Dreamin - 05-14-2022 That's a good guess....but it's not right!! This one is going to be pretty hard, too.....mostly because it's not a typical item.....that one usually sees....... RE: WhatIzIt ??? - Dave - 05-14-2022 I was gonna guess something similar - a frame that aids in doing macrame? |
