Sat/Sun October 5th/6th, 2024 - Rich - 10-05-2024

We had our Oktoberfest a couple of weeks ago with a huge car show. One came in I have never seen before. A 1953 Pontiac Chieftain Convertible. Just a beauty. Has a new engine, not the original.

Sweet ride!

Born in SE Michigan, I have a pretty good knowledge of GM cars. But the Pontiac Chieftan is a new one to me too.

Well done to both you and the restorer.

Once or twice a year our City trims the pine trees that were planted in my neighborhood about 60 years ago (a bad decision because the roots of these pines tnd to damage the main water lines between the street and the homes). The tree trimming can cause other problems for homeowners...

Is that how the original Pontiac motor looked?

RE: Sat/Sun October 5th/6th, 2024 - Rich - 10-05-2024

Peter, no, this is an improvement. Not original.

The result is pleasing on the eye. What opulence. Hope he doesn't park it under Dave's pine trees.

The galah is an iconic Australian cockatoo. Less commonly known as the pink and grey cockatoo or rose-breasted cockatoo, they are indeed the clowns of the skies. It is common vernacular to call any person clowning around, "You silly galah".

As the afternoon sun drops down, the side lighting can really show off their roseate breasts and wings.

They do clown around quite a bit.

Thanks Dave, pine tar could ruin the paint for sure!
Peter a pretty bird! Fun to watch I bet!

Fun to watch?
Antics like this are common.

RE: Sat/Sun October 5th/6th, 2024 - Don - 10-06-2024

Hey guys - I check in pretty regularly but haven't posted much. I appreciate you 3 especially for keeping some activity going. The forum is good for another year as I just renewed the domain name.

That is one sharp looking automobile Rich. Lot of money and work tied up in that.  Love the bird antics Peter. Kind of has the coloring of our Vermillion Flycatcher, but of course much larger. Dave, there is some kind of tree that overhangs where I park my truck, and is the devil to get the stains off, especially on the cover of the bed.

I was scheduled to attend a Spyder rally up in Maggie Valley starting last Tuesday, but of course Helene prevented that. Some folks still went but I wasn't going to chance it, especially with the "authorities" saying all roads in NC were closed to non-essential traffic. There is widespread devastation up that way, really sad. On a brighter note, I will be leaving Tuesday for the Kerrville Texas "Welcome Home" festival, which is a shorter version of the big fest in May. Haven't been out there since probably 2020 or 2021. I wouldn't be going except that my friend who keeps a 5th wheel trailer there year round invited me to stay with him, and he has a spare festival ticket, so I'll be making that trip out and back. Maybe I will have some photos to share when I get back. I'm only taking my P&S with me but it takes pretty good photos.

Looking ahead about 3 weeks DW and I will leave for Europe to go on a river cruise for about 3 weeks. We booked a few days before the cruise in Prague and after the cruise in Amsterdam. Not sure how much longer we will be able to travel like that so we are trying to do it while we can. This trip has been on our bucket list for a while.

Good to hear from you Don. Smile
North Carolina has really been devastated and many parts of the roads and bridges are simply not there any more.
So many people haven't even got the land they were living on any more. Many others just washed away with their houses and cars. It is a disaster zone. Sad

Maybe if you take a photo of the tree that drips on your truck, we may have a go at identifying it for you.

Hope you enjoy Texas. Smile

Here's a bit more colour from my garden.
The plants are from the genus Eremophila. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eremophila_(plant)
The bird is the mallee ringneck. or the Australian ringneck from the mallee zone. Barnardius barnardi.

MFI, observing those birds must bring a smile, if not outright laughter. Stunning color in a low sun.

I don't remember seeing a photo of the ringneck before. Gorgeous!

Hi Don. Wise decision to skip the Spyder rally. Safe travels to Texas and later on the river cruise in Europe.

No new photos to share at the moment, so please pardon me for a repeat post. I was talking to a local photographer friend and described the image, and she wanted to see it. It took about an hour to find it among the nearly 1 TB of photos on my PC. And when I finally located it I noted some things that could be improved, so I reprocessed it an hour ago...

The flora is mostly the beautiful but incredibly invasive Trumpet Vine in my back yard in 2019, and the creature came from a copyright-free website.
