Friday, March 18, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 03-18-2022 Good Friday Morning to you all. We had a local club meeting last night. Unfortunately, it was poorly attended. Several of our members have health issues and we are hoping for a speedy recovery. Here is another photo from our trip to The Henry Ford Museum. It fulfilled the "Item from a Historic Event" category for our photo scavenger hunt. Moon Buggy, The First Electric Vehicle On the Moon The first lunar rover (a.k.a. “Moon Buggy”) landed on the Moon aboard the Apollo 15 lunar module on July 30, 1971. The Moon Buggy was about the size of a Lincoln Continental, but had to fold up smaller than a Volkswagen to fit inside the Apollo spacecraft. On the moon, it only weighs 76 pounds. But on earth, it weighed 460 pounds! The wheels on the Moon Buggy were made of woven piano wires. Each wheel was independently powered by its own electric motor. RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Rich - 03-18-2022 WoW! That is amazing! The size of it and the folding up for the trip. What an amazing feat of technology! The background photo really adds to the story! RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Dreamin - 03-18-2022 What the heck happens to my posts? Am I not hitting the post reply??? I sure thought I did....Grrr.... Hi, Guys. I am impressed with that Moon Buggy...look at those tires!! Thanks for sharing this. I would have thought this would be in Washington, DC? in the air and space museum. Is this something that travels around the country? or permanent display there? Amazing piece of history!! RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Rich - 03-18-2022 Here is todays photo of our lake losing it's coat of ice. Been very spring like here for a few days. The structure left of center is the old water intake tower. We get our water from the Missouri river now. Hi Natalie! RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Quint - 03-18-2022 Hi Laurel. That's quite a piece of intricate machinery nicely displayed. Rich, good to see melting ice and blue skies. Our weather suppose to improve much after the weekend. Hi, Nat ! RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - damar - 03-18-2022 Hello everyone! I am back from the land of pins and needles! Hahahah...finished a quilt top a week or so ago and then had to do an alteration on a formal gown. Lorell, that is an amazing photo!!! Such a coincidence too because I had to stop at HobbyLobby for serger thread and DH say the LEM from Apollo 13 model marked down from $30 to $8. He loves the Apollo missions and anything space. What a great opportunity you had! Hi Rich, Natalie and Quint! Rich, the lake color os gorgeous! Love the surf line! It was stormy here today and looks like maybe Alabama had some intense weather. Hope Don is ok down there in Columbus. All I have to post today is an ipad photo of the small quilt top I recently finished. It has to be put on the frame with the batting and backing. Maybe next week! It's just what we call a scrap quilt, which are my favorite! RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Rich - 03-18-2022 Steve, good to "see" you again! Thanks for the comment, we have been seeing white a lot but not as bad as Grant. Hi Patty, what a gorgeous quilt. Our church ladies for many years made one quilt a year and sold it at auction with the proceeds going to a Mission need. Yours would have made a lot of money! Unfortunately no young members will join in so they had to disband the project. Sound like you are busy being a seamstress these days. Maybe the spring weather will give you an itchy shutter finger. RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Dreamin - 03-18-2022 I agree, Rich, beautiful blues in your photo!! Patty, that is really beautiful. I machine pieced quilts back in the 70' and 80's for the Church of the Brethren Mission sales (Rich, they had those, too) I must have pieced together over 30 quilts, and learned to quilt from the ladies there. My husband's family attended that church. In the winter, the ladies would quilt at the church everyday, and also fix some wonderful meals!! I wish I had taken photos of all the quilts.... RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - damar - 03-18-2022 Geesh my typing was pretty bad in my last post! Thanks Rich! Quilts are always great for raffles and fund raisers. I have some baby quilts I made and need to find a shelter to donate them to. We have not been anywhere for photo opportunities, so I still want to go out with my camera! It would be nice to get out of town and find something of interest. We have just been so busy and also winter is kinda blah here. Jan-March is a good sewing season and works well with cooking too. Hi Natalie! Thanks! I machine piece and machine quilt all my quilts...almost everyone does now. I wish you had photos of the quilts too! 30 may not sound like a lot, but it IS. Hours of work even sewn on a machine. I resisted machine quilting for a long time, but now accept it as part of the advancing of the tradition. More time to make more. Every year there is a small group of ladies working on a raffle quilt at the Cotton Gin Festival and they hand quilt just for the historic interest during the festival. (they probably send all their quilts out to a long arm shop when not doing living history)
RE: Friday, March 18, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 03-18-2022 Well, iI have a confession. That is not THE actual Lunar Vehicle used by Apollo 15. It would have been a while if I travelled to get photos of it. You see, that moon buggy still sits on the moon as does the moon buggies brought up by Apollo 16 and 17! Thanks all all for the nice comments you shared. The museum currently has a special APOLLO attraction. I must say, this was one of the most interesting parts of the attraction, and it was nice that they had the huge wide photo in the background. It helped make the image interesting. Hi Rich, I really enjoyed the museum and it is a great place to bring guests from out of town. Wow, what a place. We were lucky, it was not too crowded and only a few bus loads of school kids. Your view of the melting water is a wonderful and welcome sight. Pretty blues. Patty, I see why you make the scrap quilts, it is pretty and interesting. I love the variety. It feels so good to wrap oneself up in a quilt. Hand quilting vs machine quilting is like the debate between SOOTC vs Photoshopped! Who has the time anymore when we have so many other things we have to do? Natalie, You have so many great hobbies, it does not surprise me that you know how to quilt and that you helped make some for the church raffles. Hi Steve. |
